The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a premier university that provides affordable, quality higher education to Hawaiians and conducts pioneering research to address critical problems facing the state. Established in 1907, UH Mānoa is the largest and oldest of the 10 UH campuses and offers hundreds of college, graduate, and professional degrees. It has widely recognized strengths in tropical agriculture, tropical medicine, oceanography, astronomy, electrical engineering, volcanology, evolutionary biology, comparative philosophy, comparative religion, Hawaiian studies, Pacific island studies, Asian studies, and regional public health in the Pacific and Asia. With a 61% graduation rate and 103 specialties, UH Mānoa is an internationally renowned research university classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having “very high research activity”.
UH Mānoa is one of few universities in the entire country that has the distinction of granting land, maritime and space grants. It is ranked among the 60 best public universities in terms of research expenditures according to the National Science Foundation. The University employs some of the highest full-time teaching staff in the country with 76.0% of teachers employed full time. With 12 students for each faculty member it has more teachers per student than the national average which is 15 students for each instructor.
At UH Mānoa only 24.0% of teaching staff are part-time teachers who are not part of teaching staff or are not tenured. The University also has 581 graduate assistants who teach or perform tasks related to teaching.
